Chapter Seven

ONE MINUTE ALI WAS standing beside her car, and the next she was scooped up and shoved into the trunk with her groceries. The lid slammed, cutting off the light and her startled, protesting yelp.

She flexed her right hand, her fingers sore and aching. Whoever had attacked her had snatched her keys right out of her hand! Doors slammed. The engine roared to life. The car lurched forward. There came the screech of brakes and she braced herself for impact, but none came.

The car swayed sharply as it was flung around a corner, jerked the other way as it turned again. It bumped over railroad tracks, rumbled along a dirt road, bouncing in and out of potholes.

Had her abduction been witnessed? Had anyone called the police? She tried to remember if there had been any passersby on the street, but couldn’t recall seeing a soul. She’d been too wrapped up in impossible dreams.

She listened for sirens, prayed for sirens, but none sounded.

She heard, over the thunder of the wheels on the gravel road, a loud triumphant yell: “Yahoo!” and braying, male laughter.

Oh, God help her! There were two of them! At least two, and they were cheering about their act! Obviously they, too, were just as aware as she was of the lack of pursuit.

Determined not to cry from sheer terror, Ali recited to herself as many as she could recall of the uplifting thoughts she had gleaned from her last seminar.

“You can only be made a victim by your own choice.”

“Let me go!” she yelled. “Keep the car. Keep the money! Just let me go!”

If they heard her, there was no indication. The radio switched from her favorite classic rock station to one blaring out hard rock.

She needed to think, to reason things out. What could be their purpose? The deadly combination of the car’s rattling over the rough road and the blaring radio made rational thought almost impossible.

Another jolt and she bit her tongue, tasting the acrid flavor of her own blood.

She gagged. Was she about to be murdered? Her whole body shook. Why had she been kidnapped? What did they want with her? Oh, God, was this her punishment for thinking she deserved a bit of adventure in her life? If this was adventure, she hated it!

She was scared, hurt, bruised and battered from the unyielding floor of the trunk as the car continued to lurch along, still at an alarmingly high rate of speed. The volume from the rear speakers hurt her ears and made her dizzy. The speed of the car, and terror, brought nausea to her insides.

She gulped air too fast, knew she was hyperventilating, but when she tried to stop, an overwhelming sense of suffocation forced her to gasp deeply, rapidly again and again, escalating the light-headedness.

What would Katerina do in a situation like this?

For one thing, she wouldn’t panic. She’d get herself in a position to fight. Katerina wouldn’t just lie around waiting for someone else to save her. She’d do something, something…decisive.
